Sonnen are a German owned home battery solution. They have been manufacturing home battery solutions since 2010, and have been selling into the Australian market since 2016.
Sonnen offer an aesthetically pleasing home battery solution that is AC-coupled, meaning they will work with any existing solar inverter. This is very different to other DC coupled batteries, like LG Chem for example, where you will need a compatible hybrid inverter for the system to work.
Aside from looking really cool, they also offer a good range of solutions, ranging from 2 – 16kWhs of storage. They also come with a 10-year warranty, which aligns with other large competitors like Tesla and LG.
Sonnen also manufacture some of their batteries here in Australia. To be specific, they manufacture the sonnenBatterie hybrid 9.53 in Elizabeth, South Australia.
In addition to manufacturing and distributing home battery solutions, Sonnen also offer a more holistic energy solution called sonnenFlat. This gives customers the opportunity to lock in a flat rate for electricit, if they have installed a Sonnen battery and PV solution relative to their usage.
Sonnen have different plans for different volumes of household energy. For example, if you use 4000kWhs per year or under, you would only need to have a 3kW solar array with a 4kWh Sonnen battery to qualify for the lowest plan they offer. Under this plan, you would then only pay a flat rate of $49 per month for your energy bill, rather than worrying about it fluctuating with price increases and seasonal usage. The plan goes up from here depending on how much energy you use, with the highest threshold being 12,500kWh of use annually. For customers with this volume of consumption you would need to install a minimum of 10kW of solar pv with 12kWhs of battery storage. The fee would be $69 per month, instead of only $49.
Sonnen certainly have their place in the Australian home battery market place. SonnenFlat will continue to look more attractive as time passes and battery prices continue to fall.
