This week, the details of the scheme were quietly released as part of a new regulation signed off by the government. According to the explanatory notes, the scheme aims to address the financial barrier preventing many households from adopting solar technology.
The regulation notes that the upfront cost of a battery system in Queensland can be economically challenging for most consumers. Despite the decrease in solar costs over the past decade, the explanatory notes point out that access to capital for purchasing a solar battery remains a challenge for lower-income households.
Minister Mick de Brenni emphasizes that the government is dedicated to helping Queenslanders manage their electricity bills, framing the Battery Booster Rebate Scheme as an essential part of the revolutionary Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan.
“The scheme is designed to help Queenslanders drive down their power bills,” says de Brenni. The government assures that the Department of Energy and Public Works will collaborate with industry to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the programs.
To facilitate this, the department has issued a tender for an inspectorate responsible for assessing household batteries delivered under the scheme. The explanatory notes also reveal that both the Queensland and federal governments have allocated $12 million each over two years, totalling $24 million, to support this transformative initiative.

Approved batteries means battery energy storage system that is included in the list of systems approved, for the purposes of the scheme, on the electricity department’s website.
Approved installer means an installer of approved battery systems at residential premises who is included in the list of installers approved, for the purposes of the scheme, on the electricity department’s website.
