Introducing the NSW Battery Rebate
Unlocking the NSW Battery Rebate: A Smart Move for Energy Independence
As electricity prices continue to rise across Australia, more and more homeowners are searching for sustainable solutions to reduce their reliance on the grid and slash their energy bills. At GI Energy, we know that the primary motivation for many of our clients is saving money, and with the newly launched NSW Battery Rebate, there has never been a better time to invest in battery storage.
Starting on the 1st of November, this rebate offers two types of financial incentives that could significantly reduce the upfront cost of battery installation for homes and businesses alike. Let’s break down what this means for you.
What is the NSW Battery Rebate?
The NSW government is offering substantial incentives to encourage homeowners to install battery storage systems, designed to ease the load on the electricity grid during peak periods. The rebate consists of two key parts: Peak Reduction Certificates (PRCs) and a Voluntary Price Instrument (VPI).
1. Peak Reduction Certificates (PRCs)
PRCs (pronounced Percs) are the primary component of the NSW Battery Rebate. These certificates are issued based on how much energy your battery can store and reduce from the grid during peak times. For example, with a Tesla Powerwall 2, which offers 13.5 kWh of storage, you could receive up to $2,000 in rebate value. Other systems, such as the Sungrow 9.6 kWh, could qualify for rebates in the range of $1,400. This part of the rebate applies to batteries installed with solar panels or added later to existing solar systems.
2. Voluntary Price Instrument (VPI)
The VPI offers additional rebates over time, adding another layer of savings to your investment. While not as significant as the PRCs, homeowners could receive a couple hundred dollars in rebates annually for the first few years after installation.
It’s important to note that these incentives only apply to new battery installations. If you already have a battery and want to add extra storage capacity, you won’t be eligible for the PRCs, though the VPI may still apply.
Why Now is the Best Time to Act To Claim The NSW Battery Rebate
There’s a limited pool of funds available for this rebate—about 8 million certificates for this financial year, which translates to around 7,300 battery installations across the state. Given that the rebate has been highly anticipated, there’s likely to be a surge in demand from homeowners and businesses eager to capitalise on the savings.
At GI Energy, we’ve already seen strong interest from our existing clients and expect these certificates to be absorbed quickly. If you’re considering installing a battery, now is the time to act before the available rebates run out.
The Financial Benefits of Battery Storage, Aside From The NSW Battery Rebate
While the NSW Battery Rebate is a fantastic incentive, the long-term financial benefits of installing a battery go far beyond the initial savings. A battery storage system allows you to store excess energy generated by your solar panels during the day and use it during peak periods when electricity prices are higher.
This means that instead of selling your surplus energy back to the grid at a lower rate, you can use it to power your home during the evening, saving you even more on your energy bills. For many of our clients, this can result in substantial savings—especially as electricity prices continue to climb year after year.
How to Apply for the NSW Battery Rebate
The application process for the NSW Battery Rebate is straightforward, but it does require coordination between you and your installer. Here’s how it works:
- Choose an Approved Installer: To qualify for the rebate, you need to work with an approved installer like GI Energy. We’re on the list of government-approved providers, meaning we can help you access the rebate and ensure your system is eligible.
- Select Your Battery: Not all batteries are eligible for the rebate, so it’s important to choose a system from the approved list. Popular options like the Tesla Powerwall 2 and Sungrow 9.6 kWh are both eligible, and we can help you select the best system for your home based on your energy needs and budget.
- Install Your System: Once your system is installed, a simple form is completed between you and the installer to confirm the details of your battery. A small deposit of $200 + GST is typically required, even if you choose to finance the rest of the installation cost.
- Claim Your Rebate: After the installation is complete, we’ll handle the paperwork and submit your claim for the PERCS rebate on your behalf. The rebate is applied post-installation, reducing the overall cost of your system.
The Future of Energy Independence
Installing a battery is more than just a financial investment—it’s an investment in your energy independence. With a battery, you have the power to create and store your own electricity, reducing your reliance on the grid and protecting yourself from rising energy prices. And, while saving money is the primary motivator for most of our clients, many also find that contributing to a greener future is a rewarding bonus.
