Commercial Solar Solutions

1. How Does It Work?

Solar power works by converting light from the sun into electricity.

When you install solar panels on the roof of your business, they capture sunlight during the day and convert it into a direct current (DC). The inverter receives this DC and converts into an alternate current (AC), the electricity your business is powered with. Solar panels provide a great, environmentally-friendly electricity alternative.

GI Energy | Residential and Commercial Solar Power Systems
Consultation
During the consultation, we’ll conduct an energy assessment for your business. This will help us determine the best solar solution.
GI Energy | Residential and Commercial Solar Power Systems
Approval
Before we install the system, we need to get approval. This approval is similar to an approval from a council, and the green light is needed before work can begin.
GI Energy | Residential and Commercial Solar Power Systems
Installation
Once the approval has been confirmed, we can install the system.
We’ll pick an installation date that’s convenient for your business.
GI Energy | Residential and Commercial Solar Power Systems
Contact
After the installation is complete, we’ll contact the power network to let them know. In some cases, we provide a report detailing the installation to the network.
GI Energy | Residential and Commercial Solar Power Systems
Network
In the final step, the power network will send someone to your business to reprogram your power metre. Congratulations, now you're using solar power!
2. Our Philosophy

The GI Energy philosophy for commercial energy reduction:

When adopting an energy reduction strategy for your business its important to ensure the company you engage has the correct level of knowledge and experience to design a strategy that covers all bases. We have broken down a basic strategy for you here:

Sizing a solar array for a residential property is a relatively straightforward process. We can use power bills and information provided by the customer to understand their usage and correctly size a system. For commercial customers the process is more in depth. We assess the power bills to understand the tariffs and charges that affect the invoice value. Using data provided by the network owner, or by metering software installed, we then analyse the consumption profile in detail. We then use brand new industry leading software to build an accurate and in depth consumption analysis and profile, which provides a precise report for every individuals site with regards to how they use power. This report includes a breakdown of daily and monthly consumption patterns, peak power use times, base load information, seasonal fluctuations and all other variable factors that simply cannot be determined effectively or accurately with any other software or by simply looking at a power bill and hours of operation.

Once we have this detailed consumption profile completed we analyse the appliances and equipment that are using power for the business and seek ways to reduce the base load, or peak power before sizing the solar system. There are several ways we can help reduce power consumption before installing a solar system. Often, these simple changes will result in a smaller, and therefore more cost effective solar array. Most companies are not aware of these additional saving methods and will simply design a solar array based on current usage, which will often be larger than necessary due to the correct level of care not being taken before sizing the array.

We will then analyse the tariffs and retailer the customer is currently purchasing power through. Its likely there are additional tariffs / retailers available that will help save more money after the energy saving strategy is implemented. Once again, we have the experience dealing with small to large-scale energy retailers and understand what is available for our customers. This can be daunting experience and is something that without vast industry knowledge can be difficult to navigate. GI Energy offers this service at no cost and no obligation for customers when creating an energy savings strategy.

The next step is to analyse the existing infrastructure including roof areas, ground mount locations, mains feed to site, main and sub switch boards and other infrastructure that can affect the efficiency and feasibility of a solar energy installation.

Now we have the full picture in terms of what is needed, and what can be installed effectively we would move to creating a solar energy production profile for our customers. We create the solar energy production profile using the geographical location of the business, roof or ground mount orientation and tilt angle, shade analysis, products used all other variable factors to create a detailed and accurate production profile. This profile can then overlap the consumption profile to provide an accurate solar utilisation report. This report gives us the exact amount of solar energy that will be used on site, and allows us to create a precise report in order to determine the financial case for the proposed strategy.

In additional to this we also understand the business case for energy saving strategies and will incorporate tactical finance options, which are often subsided, into this energy assessment. There are several ways to fund an energy reduction strategy. At GI Energy we understand you are searching for solutions that will save your business money, rather than cost money. With this in mind we can almost always design a strategy that is cash flow positive from day one, often with zero capital down.

4. Rebates

Government Solar Rebates Explained

There are basically three different Government rebates available. The one that applies to you will depend on your individual circumstances as explained to the right. If you’re unsure about how the Government rebates work, there’s no need to worry. GI Energy will make this process as easy as possible for you. We have a team ready to prepare, complete, and submit all the necessary paperwork for you!

Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs)

Government rebates are designed to help Australia reach our target of having 20% of all energy generations come from a clean energy source by the year 2020. STCs are available for solar power systems that are 99.9kW or less. STCs are provided as an upfront subsidy, and the number of certificates awarded per solar power system will depend on where your home or business is located, as well as how large the system is you choose to install. Australia is mapped into five different zones, with each zone receiving a differing amount of sunlight each day. Installations in zones that receive more sunlight will be eligible for more certificates. In addition, larger systems also receive more certificates, and therefore a higher rebate.

Large-scale Generation Certificates (LGCs)

Like STCs, LGCs are designed to help Australia reach it’s clean energy goal by 2020. Businesses who install a solar power system that is 100kW or larger, will eligible for LGCs. Unlike STCs that are available as an upfront subsidy, LGCs are provided as ongoing payments. For every 1MWh of renewable electricity generated, you’ll be eligible for one LGC.

Grid Feed in Tarrifs

Grid feed in tariffs are different again. This is a rate that’s paid for any electricity that’s fed back into the electricity grid from a renewable source, such as your home or business’ solar panel system. In Australia, grid feed-in tariffs are run by individual states, so the specific arrangement will be different depending on your premises location. These feed in tariffs are also not available for every system. The size of the system as well as its location will determine if you are eligible for any feed in tariff.

7. Finance

Strategic Renewable Energy Finance Available

If capital purchase is not an option then our commercial clients will usually use one of these three options for finance: Commercial Rental, Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) or Equipment finance.

Power Purchase Agreement

A Power Purchase Agreement is a solar power specific finance term that allows customers to pay off their solar power system over a term by purchasing power from the installed array.

Commercial Rental

GI Energy partners with Energy Ease for commercial rentals. Energy Ease offers terms of up to ten years, and a commercial rental may provide attractive tax benefits for customers.

Equipment Finance

For equipment finance loans, GI Energy partners with NAB, who offers a 0.7%pa discount from the standard finance rate. The subsidised rate is made available through the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC).
